  • Edit App Names

    Posted by:
When adding a flex editor app to a particular page, how can you go in and edit the name of that app to help organize where each app will appear on the final page?  For instance, if a teacher adds in two or more flex editor apps, how do you change the name of each flex editor app on the "behind the scenes" page? I know once you click on the flex editor page you can edit the text on that page but am rather looking for the changing the name of type of app not the text on that page.

Jared and Jason both discussed the methods of assigning students work on Schoolwires. What is the most efficent way of teaching these methods to others. (I have to admit that Jared showed me how to link my calendar but I doubt I could repeat the process)

  • Pre-training Survey?

    Posted by:
I know one of the suggestions from the meeting this morning was to conduct a survey of your staff prior to the trainings on June 20/21.  What is anyone thinking of asking to assess knowledge and familiarity to better assist staff members?  Should we try to predetermine those three tiers to see who might need the most assistance?

  • Staff Training

    Posted by:
I am planning on displaying my page and describing how to use each feature.  I am going to make a PPT with the basic setup and instructions to combine all documents and instructions in one location.  Additionally, I am going to have a link on my own page for the PPT and any other documents/links they may need.  During the three hour time slot I am going to reserve the computer lab and be available in one location if teachers need individual assistance.

  • How I'll demonstrate setting up a teacher site

    Posted by:
I plan to show the staff Jason's video tutorial for setting up a teacher home page before they begin.  There will be a link to the tutorial in the introductory email, but I won't assume that everyone will have an opportunity to look at it before the training session.  That video should put them at ease since it shows how simple it is to set up a home page.  Before we begin I'll also address questions about what should be on the teacher site versus what should be on Blackboard.  I'll also remind them to hit Save often!

  • Table formatting

    Posted by:
I've been having problems with formatting a table. In a Flex Editor App, I clicked the "Insert Table" icon. I was able to create and populate a table, but the gridlines were not visible on my website. There is no button or option that I can find that will quickly do this. As far as I can tell, the only way is to click inside each individual cell, then click the "Cell Properties" icon, then make the border color black, then type in "1" next to how many pixels you want the border to be.

There must be an easier way, I just haven't been able to find it.

  • Table formatting problem solved!

    Posted by:
Figured out how to get gridlines to show in a table:
    1) Right click on the table
    2) Table Options
    3) Verbs
    4) Table Border
    5) Choose your desired # of pixels.

  • Calendar

    Posted by:
I use Google Calendar and have multiple school, personal, etc calendars, so I embedded my Google school calendar into the calendar page. Also, played around with adding a background image to a page. I like the look, but not sure how to fade the image so the text is darker.

  • Managing Class Newsletters

    Posted by:
One easy way is to use the Headlines and Features tool.

Add the Headlines/Features App to your home page or a new "Flex" page and called it "Newsletters".

Once you've added it and moved it to the right section of your page, click on it to edit it.

Click on the green New Headline button

The Headline Title could be "January Newletter" or "Week of 4/5/2013".  The "teaser" text is optional.
Everything else on this page is optional, including setting when the item will appear and subsequently disappear from your site!

To actually put the newsletter there, click on the TAB above where you typed the Headline Title called "Headline Body"

This opens a Flex Editor screen into which you can cut and paste from Word or just type the newsletter.

Make sure at the bottom that "Activate on my page" is ticked, then hit Save.

When viewers go to your Newsletter page, they will see just the list of headlines (these can be rearranged also)
Clicking on the headline opens up the content of the newsletter.

  • Built-In Clip Art

    Posted by:
I found clip art provided by School Wires.  Click the "insert image" icon in the same window where you would enter text in a flex app.  Then choose "Clip Art" from the bottom left.  Note:  Delete the word "apple" in the search box before selecting a category in order to browse the picture gallery.

In the "Options" tab, you can set when your page displays.  Great for setting up a page for an event and then not having to worry about when it is active and hidden.

What does Blackboard do that Schoolwires can't?  For high school teachers, what are the features in Blackboard that will make it worth keeping?

  • Posting presentations and linking to videos

    Posted by:
If I post a digital presentation (such as a PowerPoint or a Prezi) that contains a link to a video, will there be any problems playing the video?  Is there a way for students to post a presentation on a teacher site?  I believe they can only post text on a blog.
